Best story from behind the wood | I worked at a rather upscale bar in on a street full of pubs and dives. One day a guy wanders in wearing a hospital gown. He smells like shit and looks worse. He sits down at the bar, orders the cheapest beer on the menu, pays cash, drinks without talking to anyone and leaves. A few days later he shows up again in roughly the same state of affairs and proceeds to do the same thing. Danny (the other bartender) and I kind of toss around the idea of kicking him out, (he really does smell awful and he’s wearing a hospital gown) but we decide that since he’s done nothing wrong we’ll just let him be. Well after about three visits he stops coming in. About 4 months later, on a quiet Monday, this regular looking dude walks in, happy as you please, plops down at the bar and proclaims ‘Danny! Harrison! Remember Me?’ We of course tell him we have have no idea who the hell he is. Unfazed, he goes on to explain that he was the dude in the hospital gown. Apparently, he had had a massive heart attack, fallen into a coma and had woken up some weeks later in the hospital. After a few further weeks in the hospital he had managed to sneak out to look for a drink. The neighborhood we were in wasn’t far and he had tried every pub and dive on the street. Every pub and dive on the street had taken one look at him and kicked his ass to the curb, it was only out of desperation that he walked in to the cocktail and oyster joint on the corner. And it was there, in the fanciest bar on the street, that he found a place to drink in comfort. So there he went. Every time he managed to sneak out. Then, once he was better, he came back to finally introduce himself. His name was John and he was the only patron to send us a Christmas Card that year. Whenever someone who looks a little out of place, or like they don’t belong walks into the bar, I think of John and remember how rough patches can come up out of no where and you never know where that little bit of extra help will come from.
