Cocktail: Coffee’s For Closers | Bartender: Frederic Yarm

As Espresso Martini fever was growing circa 2022, a guest at Drink in Boston wanted a dessert cocktail that was coffee flavored and I came up with this Flip on the fly. I utilized Borghetti Espresso Liqueur and Averna from our house Espresso Martini recipe and the Benedictine, egg, and nutmeg garnish from the century-old Colleen Bawn. For a name, I dubbed this one after a line from the 1992 movie Glengarry Glen Ross – namely Coffee’s for Closers. Another line from that movie is “A. B. C.: Always be closing” except here the A. B. C. is Averna, Benedictine, coffee liqueur!

Cocktail: Coffee's For Closers | Bartender Atlas

1 oz Averna
1 oz Benedictine
1 oz Coffee Liqueur
1 Whole Egg

Shake one round without ice and one round with ice, strain into a single old fashioned glass, and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and freshly grated coffee. This recipe was developed with Borghetti but should work well with most other coffee-flavored liqueurs.

Fred got into cocktails by making them home and posting them on his LiveJournal in 2006 that led to the creation of the CocktailVirgin blog which included recipes of what Boston's cocktail bars were doing at the time. With a pause in his day job, Fred published his first book, Drink & Tell: A Boston Cocktail Book, in 2012 with 505 recipes from around town. That opened up doors for giving talks and classes, and then finally a guest shift behind a bar. After that, Fred saw his new calling and got a job as a barback. Fred has been bartending around town since 2013, wrote a second drink book in 2017, and is still blogging away with recipes today as both a home enthusiast and professional bartender.
