The folx at Dairy Distillery recently asked us to create a drink with their new product, Vodkow Cream. I got excited because every other cream liqueur is flavoured (at least a little) and usually has a whisky as the base spirit. Vodkow Cream gives you simply Cream and Liquor. This opens a bunch of doors that cream liqueurs usually don’t fit through.
Dairy Distillery is already an impressive enterprise in that they have taken the leftovers from other dairy product production and they distill it until it’s neutral… or close to it which becomes their Vodkow vodka. The Vodkow Cream expression combines their Vodkow vodka with cream and makes for a rich but not overwhelming liqueur. Another note: without the barrel aged flavours of whiskey, there is a lot more you can do with this cream liqueur.
I made this drink keeping the idea of an “after dinner drink” in mind. While Vodkow Cream can be added to coffee as is, I wanted to work with some other ingredients that we associate with the hour or so after eating a bunch. Amaro fits the bill perfectly, but I wanted to make sure to use one that was very strong and not too citrus-forward. Combining turmeric and cinnamon sounds like autumn and tastes like that too. Angostura bitters really pull the whole drink together.
2oz Vodkow Cream
0.75oz Turmeric/Cinnamon Syrup*
0.5oz Amaro Averna
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Grated cinnamon
Combine all ingredients and shake on ice for 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass (or a rocks glass over ice if you want). Garnish with grated cinnamon.
*Turmeric/Cinnamon Syrup: Combine 125ml of hot water with 0.5 cup of white sugar, one 2 inch cinnamon stick and 0.5 tablespoon of dried ground turmeric. Stir until water has dissolved and let sit until room temperature. Strain through cheesecloth, or coffee filter if you have all day, and store in fridge. Keeps for ten days. Agitate often and before use.
