Cocktail: The Black Death | Bartender: Patricia Jeanson

I present to you a recipe taken from my series of cinema-inspired cocktail photos called Ius Memoria. The Black Death cocktail is directly inspired by the film The Seventh Seal from Ingmar Bergman. The loss of innocence, faith in God and the questions that the film raises. It includes Italian brandy, lingonberry liqueur, red wine and a homemade syrup of lily flowers, juniper berries and orange zest.

1.5 oz Brandy Vecchia Romagna
0.75 oz of Puyjalon Rubis Nordique cranberry liqueur
0.5 oz Valpolicella red wine
1 oz Lily flower, Juniper berry and Orange zest Syrup*

In a shaker tin or mixing glass full of ice, pour all the ingredients and stir gently. Double strain in a rock glass over a big ice cube. Garnish with dried lily flowers and a slice of dehydrated orange.

*Lily flower, Juniper berry and Orange zest Syrup:
In a cauldron, mix 250ml water, 250g sugar, 1 tablespoon of lily flower, 1 tablespoon of crushed juniper berries and zest of an orange. Bring to a boil, stirring gently to dissolve the sugar. Let it simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes. Take off heat and let cool. Filter the syrup to remove the lily flowers, juniper berries and orange zest. Store the syrup in a clean, airtight bottle in the refrigerator.
