Hospitality Gems: Tommy Wong

 

Tommy’s journey began in his family’s alcohol distribution business, where he witnessed the explosive growth of China’s alcohol industry. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he began to
explore world’s finest bars and vineyards, ultimately leading him to co-found and partner with some of the region’s top restaurant and bars, including CMYK (Changsha, 2024 Asia’s 50 Best Bars #43, Tatler Best of Asia 2024), Hope & Sesame (2024 Asia’s 50 Best Bars #14, Best Bar in China, Tatler Best of Asia 2024), and DSK Cocktail Club (Guangzhou). His influence extends beyond his establishments, as he actively mentors and empowers emerging F&B professionals. This leadership has been recognized by Tatler Asia, who named him 2024 Gen.T Leader of Tomorrow. In 2024, Tommy was crowned the Greater China area champion of The Torres Brandy Zero Challenge, a competition for the best sustainable projects in the hospitality industry.

Bartender Atlas: Where were you born?
Tommy Wong: I was born in the concrete jungle of HONG KONG

BA: What city do you work in?

TW: I commute between Hong Kong and Shenzhen almost daily. You’ll find me sometimes in Guangzhou and Changsha too. 

BA: Where do you go out to eat and drink on your days off?

TW: In Hong Kong I go to Little Bao (@littlebaohk) – Why? They made me a fried chicken birthday cake for my 40th. (Feel free to ask for pics). I also like The Diplomat (@thediplomathk) where I will keep drinking mini Gibsons until they bring me oven fresh cookies (usually past midnight).

In Shenzhen I like Gem Garden (@gemgardensz) for their refined Chiu Chow cuisine. It’s an incredible place to chow down. I also like 2xFifty Korean Kitchen & Bar (@2xfifty.sz) where my man KJ will keep bringing me highballs until I say stop. Then he’ll bring me a 50/50 martini before sending me home. 

BA: What do you do outside of work on your days off?
TW: Roll around on the floor with my daughter Colette, and her cat siblings, Triggy and Giggles. 

BA: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? 
TW: Worrying only takes away todays peace, nothing else. 

BA: What’s something you’re excited about?

TW: Whenever my wife comes home with a smirk and a story.
