Actions
- Creating your own value statement
- 3-4 lines about what’s important to you, these are emotional and not tied to working, i.e. no “I plan to be the best bartender in Parkdale in the next five years”
- When you hang out at your favourite spots, look around, do they have publicly displayed pride stickers, breastfeeding stickers, “Ask for Angela” or anything else that could support the community at large?
- Look up a spot that has had a “controversy” – how did they handle it? Do you think it was handled well? If it was, what did they do well?
Questions to ask
- When interviewing at a new spot, ask about their value statements or code of conduct, does it fall into alignment with your beliefs?
- Does your place of employment have policies for mental health care? Are they affiliated with an organization that works on bettering mental health care in hospitality?
- If no, what is the reason? Is it monetary constraints, but they have suggestions? Or do they not believe in it?
- How do they deal with accountability? Are staff encouraged to ask questions of management or ownership without fear of reprisal?
